When I started out, I thought, "I'm going to put together a little book of eyes in art, before and after the Lover's Eyes I love so much. Hm, I hope there are enough examples for an entire book. I wonder how I'll pad it out..."

Well.

Eyes go back to the earliest surviving examples of human art, and they're symbolically linked to the creation of good, evil, and nothing less than the whole universe. They're strange. They're mystical. They're omniscient. But they're also light-hearted, witty, and delightfully romantic. The more I started looking for eyes, the more I started seeing them everywhere in both historical and contemporary art.

For example:

Egyptian wedjet eyes

Evil eyes

Third eyes

Ex votos

All-seeing eyea

Lover's eye miniatures

Curiosity cabinet eye models

Optometrist folk signs

Post-war surrealism

Pop surrealism

Schiaparelli

Gucci

John Derian, Astier de Villatte, Jonathan Adler, and other art-meets-homewares designers

...And many of your favorite contemporary artists.

What happens when you put together a book is that you notice something you wouldn't have noticed otherwise. My greatest concern as I was deep my book-writing cave with a messy bun and reading glasses surrounded by stacks of books and slips of paper and mugs of tea, was that all the crazy research wouldn't hang together. This one is for you: it has pretty watercolor illustrations of the most intriguing and romantic antiques - some rare, and some that you'll be able to come across in your local thrift store - and it will have just the right amount of text so you don't feel like you're doing homework but rather taking in just enough to know what a piece is, why it was made, and what to watch out for.

Also: this book isn't a book!

What?!

It's a boxed collection of lovely-sized, heavy-stock cards with illustrations on one side and the text on the other, so you can turn through the pages as it lies open on your coffee table as if it were a book, or you can take out your favorites, frame them, and hang them on the wall.

You'll learn about: balloon chairs, Staffordshire dogs, Imari china, Windsor chairs, tulipieres, ginger jars, Delft tiles, Gustavian furniture, patch boxes, nautilus cups, intaglios, sailor's valentines, tramp art, lusterware, oyster plates, Vietnamese shipwreck pottery, and so on....

I began working on this book with my mother before she passed away. We would sit at the kitchen table and go through our lists of antiques, and she would tell me more about the stories and histories of the objects - she knew an incredible amount and she had a memory for details. She also had impeccable taste. My mother had The Irish Pedlar antiques here in the Napa Valley for a quarter of a century, and it was a charming shop with wonderful goodies she found in Ireland, England, and France.
