Othello the Jackfield Staffordshire Spaniel Portrait

This is a portrait of Othello, an antique Staffordshire Spaniel known as a "Jackfield", in glossy black glaze over red clay. These black spaniels were part of a larger trend in somber 19th-century taste which followed Queen Victoria's prolonged mourning for Prince Albert in 1861. Tha painting is in oils on a vintage Mikasa platter in the black and gold "Mount Holyoke" pattern. 15"x10.75"
