No. 2128 "Bethany Climbed Down the Ivy to the Carriage Waiting Below" Portrait Plate
An oil portrait painting of Bethany in a green dress on an antique English Mason's "Vista" pattern plate with a red transferware border of an wreath of intricate ivy, and with scalloped, raised white edged; paired with a Chintz Indien frame from an 18th-century red, blue-grey, and ecru botanical Indian chintz fabric. The plate measures 6.5"; the frame measures 10" x 10". Entitled "Bethany Climbed Down the Ivy to the Carriage Waiting Below".
THE STORY: Inspired by literature, my portraits have novelistic titles that hint at the adventures of their heroines. In this particular mini-collection, the titles are semi-autobiographical and refer to the people, places, and adventures from my time living in France.
THE CHINA: Many of my paintings are set in antique saucers and dishes which not only work as unexpected frames but add a layer of historical narrative on top of the origin story. Each piece has a unique blend, so that some are more romantic, some more exotic, and some more otherworldly.
THE FRAMES: In addition to giving them greater significance, wall impact, and square practicality, the complementary images on these frames add yet another layer of historical resonance. Taken from early maps, gravures, wallpapers, and domino papers, they are printed with a state-of-the-art giclee printer using archival inks, heavy paper, specialty glue, wood bases, velvet backs, and hanging hardware. The plates are mounted with wire-spring holders and can be removed to be hung by themselves.
